Welcome to SPEA: On the Rhine!
A Message from the Program Director (Prof. Denvil Duncan)
Welcome to the informal, but informative, website for IU's "SPEA: On the Rhine" study abroad program! There is also a formal IU SPEA site for this program, which contains much of the information you find on this site.
This site offers information about the program and its host city and country. The program focuses on governance issues taught from the comparative perspective, with a special focus on the United States, Germany, and the European Union. As you will find in the course schedule, the program includes various excursions to cultural, political, and socio-economic sites of interest, including the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France and several EU institutions in Brussels, Belgium; the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the European Central Bank; and the historic city of Heidelberg, Germany.
I will try to update this site with new information whenever possible, including orientation and travel information for students after their acceptance to the program. At any time, feel free to contact me via email with questions ([email protected]).
The program is hosted by Speyer University, and the courses are taught by instructors from both Indiana University and Speyer University. American students are fully immersed in Speyer University's curricular offerings, working side-by-side and in groups with German and other European students.
All courses are taught in English.
Students from both IU Bloomington and IUPUI can earn six IU credits in the five-week course. Students can also qualify for a variety of scholarships that reduce the price to approximately the equivalent of earning the credits in Indiana.
Speyer, Germany is a beautiful, historic city of approximately 50,000 people located in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate on the Rhine River. The campus is in the city, approximately one mile from the city square that features many cafes, beer gardens, restaurants, and shops. Speyer is a clean, unique, and incredibly safe city with historic roman architecture, cobbled streets, and one of Germany's most famous cathedrals in the center of the city. The 2,000-year-old city of Speyer is a quick train ride away from Frankfurt and Mannheim, where connecting trains can be taken to various destinations across Europe.
The intent of this program is to offer students exposure to new intellectual and cultural experiences. Both the substantive and cultural experience will serve students well in developing knowledge, skills, and assets desired by both prospective graduate schools and employers with interests related to international governance issues in public policy, public administration, economics, and international law. Most importantly, the program offers students a personally enriching experience that they will never forget.
Students stay on campus in dormitories that offer full amenities.
